A skilled spotter provides safety without stealing the lifter’s hard-earned repetition. Understanding exact cues and hand placement makes heavy bench pressing safe and rewarding for both training partners.
Pre-Set Verbal Alignment
Never un-rack the bar without establishing two things: the rep target (e.g. "We are aiming for 5 reps, maybe 6 if moving fast") and the liftoff countdown ("1, 2, 3, Lift").
The Golden Rule: Hands Close, Zero Contact Unless Bar Reverses
Keep your hands hovering inches beneath the bar in an alternating over-under grip. As long as the barbell continues moving upward—even through a slow grind—do not touch the bar. Only intervene when vertical velocity completely ceases or reverses downward.
